(Unintentionally NSFW) Review of Fab Ur Nails XL Gold Stamper Set & Storytime With Stamper Snob Tara

I finally got with the program & ordered Fab Ur Nails stampers, which seem to be all the rage amongst nailies on the ol Instagrammies. I wanted to test these bad boys right outta the package to see if they’re as kickass as everyone says that they are.

Fab Ur Nails 2pc XL Gold Stamper Set

*SPOILER ALERT* They are…

YouTube video & pics after the jump. But let’s grab a beer & enjoy a lil Story Time With Tara before we get into the deets on these FUN stampers.

When I was shoppin’ for my very first supply of stamping stuffs way back when, I spotted that $1.99 stamper (you know the one I’m talmbout, ladies…you *all* have it) & thought, “whaaat this stamper is only $1.99?! What a bargain! How is this company still in business if they’re sellin’ stampers for $1.99?! THIS IS AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES!”

So into my cart it went, onto my credit card it went, and into hibernation I went for the roughly 27 weeks that I waited for it to arrive from Hong Kong.

DELIVERY DAY! After tearing into my package with the gusto & fervor of a six-year-old on Christmas morning, I began “stamping.” But nothin’ was hap’nin. So I stamped again & stamped again & stamped again & stamped again & stamped again & stam…WHAT THE HELL AM I DOIN’ WRONG?!

It only took me about 57 minutes, an entire bottle of polish & a whole roll’a paper towels to consider the fact that just maaaaaybe my trusty, brand-spankin-new $1.99 stamper was absolute shit. Upon accepting defeat, I gazed up to the heavens, shook my fist in the air, wailed “DAMN YOU, HONG KONG. DAMN YOUUUUU!” and wept openly.

When you make your inaugural foray into the world of stamping using an (unbeknownst to you) garbage stamper, it’s a huge let-down when you don’t get the results that you had expected. You feel worthless & helpless & poopy & pissy & all sorts of gross feels. I guess it’s sorta like the water marbling technique, in that if you fail & fail & fail at it, eventually you’re gonna throw your hands in the air (and your nail art tools across the room) and say “fuck it, I quit.”

But don’t give up, chirrens. Don’t ever give up. When you see that $1.99 stamper (or *gasp* that $.99 stamper!), give it the middle finger & keep on movin’. Don’eem be tempted. Spend those few extra bucks on a quaaaality stamper. You may think that a $10-$15 price point for a stamper/scraper set is preposterous, but trust me when I tell ya, it’ll save your sanity…and your polish…and your paper towels…and your acetone…

Basically, I say all of that to say this: I’m kiiiiind of a picky bitch when it comes to stamper heads now.

Okay, back to the review!

I still decided to get this FUN set, even though I knew that they weren’t firm, which is what I prefer. I do a ton of reverse stamp designs, so I was excited to have two more XL heads on which to work.

But when I took em outta the envelope, they looked like XL stampers that had been put through a dryer cycle. #shrunkenheads

I suppose size can be, uh, “open to interpretation”… I mean, men have been lyin’ to us about size our entire adult lives, amirite ladies? *cough* But in comparison to my UberChic Beauty (original) XL stamper, the FUN ones are downright teeny.

Left: UberChic Beauty XL non-sticky stamper; right: Fab Ur Nails XL stamper

The XL FUN stampers are each 2.8cm, whereas the XL UC stamper is 3.7cm.

A few weeks ago, I had to file my nails down super short, so I suppose that size really doesn’t matter when it comes to these heads. They’re still plenty big enough to cover my enter nail. And I’m sure that, when the time comes, I’ll be able to create reverse stamp designs on em with no problem.

In addition to the size issue, I also had to get reacquainted with the technique itself. See, I’m a roller. But ya can’t really roll a squishy stamper to pick up an image, so I had to do a lil dual action “mash & roll.” Whatever I did, it worked.

Review of Fab Ur Nails XL Gold Stamper Set. Here are the results that I achieved using these stampers straight out of the packaging.

They truly do stamp straight outta the box! Absolutely no priming needed. I just touched em to my lint roller to clean off any fuzzies or finger grease or whatever & off I went.

The gold holder (or “cap,” as it’s been called) is ribbed with four grooves that allow for a better grip during stamping. A lotta stampers have metal shot-glass style holders that are hard to hang on to with fingers that are dried out from acetone usage (which is why my UC stamper in the pic above is swaddled in rubber bands). But the FUN caps are relatively easy to handle. AND THEY’RE SO PRETTY!

These lil guys really are fab, and this self-proclaimed stamper snob highly recommends em.

If you’ve been incorporating stamping into your nail art designs for a while, you already have your favorite stamper. You may have 37 different ones, but you still have THE ONE. Like, if stampers were people, that stamper would be your Person. Nawmeen?

So I’m not gonna sit here & tell you “ZOMG you HAFTA go buy these Fab Ur Nails stampers!” Cuz what works for some folks, might not work for other folks. You may not like sticky. You may not like squishy. You may not like firm.

Personally, I prefer firm heads. (Alright, this sounds like it’s startin’ to take a turn for the dirty.) And, as I’ve said, I prefer to roll, not mash. (Geez, what is hap’nin here?!) However, this firm fan will continue to use these softies because they’re just. that. good.

Check out my YouTube vid to see the entire review from start to finish…and to also see STRAIGHT UP MY NOSE in the reflection of the stamping plate, cuz I’m an idiot. smh

Summary:

Size – definitely not XL, more of a medium
Holder – ribbed for her pleasure a better grip
Firmness – squishy, not super sticky
Price – currently $12 on FUN website
Ship time – about a 10-14 day wait for my package to arrive from the Philippines, which is a far cry from the “roughly 27 weeks” that I waited when I ordered nail stuffs from Hong Kong

Gimme a shout & lemme know how many stampers are in your collection, and which one is your fave.

See y’all next time!
